Thea Energy Tops Up Its Series B as the Stellarator Race Heats Up

Thea Energy has closed an extension to its Series B, drawing in Brevan Howard Macro Venture, Aloniq, ALJ Investments, and Beyond Earth Ventures on top of the $100M round it raised in May. The Princeton spinout is betting on a planar-coil stellarator built from mass-manufacturable magnets and software control, and is channeling the fresh capital into magnet production lines and its Eos fusion system. The extension amount was undisclosed.

What happened
  • Thea closed a Series B extension with Brevan Howard Macro Venture, Aloniq, ALJ, and Beyond Earth Ventures joining.

  • It builds on the $100M Series B led by Thomas Tull's US Innovative Technology Fund in May.

  • Capital targets modular HTS magnet production and its Eos integrated system; the amount wasn't disclosed.

Radiant Trucks Its Microreactor to the Only Full-Power Test Bed in the US

Radiant's Kaleidos, a 1 MWe transportable microreactor, has reached Idaho National Laboratory's DOME facility for what the company calls the industry's only full-scale, full-power microreactor test. After a 1,000-mile road trip on a trailer, the helium-cooled, TRISO-fueled unit will run a five-phase campaign from zero-power criticality to a 150-hour continuous run — the same design Radiant plans to mass-produce at its Oak Ridge factory and ship to customers by 2028.

What happened
  • Radiant delivered its 1 MWe Kaleidos microreactor to INL's DOME after a 1,000-mile road move.

  • It will be the first reactor to go critical in DOME in decades, running a five-phase full-power test.

  • The unit is the same design and fuel load destined for Radiant's Oak Ridge R-50 production line.

Why it matters
  • A full-scale, full-power test — not a sub-scale article — is a hard de-risking step most peers haven't reached.

  • Test data feeds directly into Radiant's NRC licence application, targeted for late 2026.

  • Transportable microreactors target off-grid, military, and data-center power; Radiant has a 2028 Air Force delivery.

  • Radiant is a private, mass-manufacturing bet on microreactors as a product, not a one-off project.

The First Public Fusion Company Lands Its First Commercial Framework

General Fusion, which became the first publicly listed fusion company after a July SPAC merger, used its first business update to unveil a milestone-based framework agreement with Italy's Renexia for potential commercial deployment, plus a diagnostics partnership with General Atomics. The Vancouver-based company — pursuing magnetized target fusion — holds roughly $150M to push its LM26 machine toward the plasma conditions needed for net energy.

What happened
  • General Fusion announced a milestone-based framework with Renexia (Toto Group) for potential deployment in Italy.

  • It added a General Atomics collaboration on plasma diagnostics above 10 keV.

  • The update follows its July Nasdaq listing (~$150M cash) via SPAC; LM26 has reached ~8.4M°C en route to 1 keV.

Why it matters
  • A commercial framework, however preliminary, is a rare signal of customer pull in pre-net-energy fusion.

  • Magnetized target fusion avoids superconducting magnets and lasers — a differentiated cost thesis.

  • As the first public fusion pure-play, General Fusion sets a visible valuation benchmark for the field.

  • General Fusion is now publicly listed (GFUZ) — a liquidity and benchmark signal, not a private entry.

  • Its runway funds LM26 milestones only through 2028, well short of a commercial plant (~2035 target).

IBM Cools the Plumbing for a Fault-Tolerant Machine

IBM has connected and cooled two cryogenic modules into a single sub-15-millikelvin environment — the refrigeration backbone it will need to link hundreds of quantum chips. The milestone advances IBM's roadmap toward Starling, the fault-tolerant quantum computer it aims to deliver in 2029. Combined, the modules stand more than eight feet tall and reached near-absolute-zero in under five days, with Nighthawk processors due to be installed later this year.

What happened
  • IBM joined two cryogenic modules into one system cooled to below 15 millikelvin.

  • The modules stand 8+ feet tall and reached 4 Kelvin in under five days.

  • It's a step toward IBM Quantum Starling (2029), IBM's planned first fault-tolerant machine.

Why it matters
  • Scaling to hundreds of chips needs shared ultra-cold infrastructure — the unglamorous bottleneck IBM just tackled.

  • IBM's 2027 milestone (L-couplers, 1,000+ programmable qubits) now looks on track.

  • Progress from a roadmap leader de-risks timelines for the whole fault-tolerance thesis.

  • IBM is publicly listed (NYSE: IBM) — read this as sector timing, not a private entry.

  • On-schedule progress pulls forward the commercial window for quantum-adjacent private plays (cryogenics, control, software).

  • Risk: 2029 is still years out, and engineering milestones don't guarantee quantum advantage on real problems.
